The Wonderful Invention of Air Conditioning!

Carrier AC systemAir conditioning is such a ubiquitous part of life that it is hard to imagine a time without it. Even so, people did without HVAC units for thousands of years as AC was only invented in 1902 and it was decades before HVAC units were installed in businesses and homes across the nation.

Who Invented Air Conditioning?

In 1902, Willis Carrier invented the first air conditioning unit to run on electricity. The unit was able to not only control the temperature but also reduce humidity. In 1915, Mr. Carrier founded the Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America to promote his new invention. He began installing residential AC units in homes shortly thereafter although it wasn’t until 1933 that the company developed an air conditioner with the belt-driven condensing unit and mechanical controls that is now the standard model for AC units manufactured by a wide range of companies.

Air Conditioning Goes Viral

The installation of air conditioning units in homes in the 1920s is credited with encouraging large numbers of people to migrate from northern states to hotter southern states such as Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana. Even so, it wasn’t until the 1950s that unit sales expanded dramatically throughout the nation.

Recent statistics indicate that, as of now, up to 87% of all homes in the country have an AC unit. Air conditioning is a must for any business in just about any industry as employees and consumers alike expect companies to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature year-round.

Progression of AC Technology

Air conditioning technology has naturally progressed immensely since AC units were first invented well over one hundred years ago. Now consumers can choose an HVAC unit from a wide range of brand names, types, and models, making it possible for anyone to obtain an air conditioner that suits his or her exact needs and budget. SEER ratings provide consumers with information regarding how much power an HVAC unit will use.
