Is Your Home Under Insulated?

Nothing is more important than adequate insulation when it comes to the comfort and energy efficiency of your home. Below are indicators that you’re living in an under-insulated home.

Increased Energy Bills

Carefully evaluate your home’s energy bills, and if you notice a significant increase in the bills for the past few months or years, then it means that your home is under-insulated. Sometimes the bloated insulation in the walls and attics may have come down causing the insulation to be less efficient hence resulting in areas that aren’t protected from extremely cold temperatures. Sometimes you may fail to notice the extreme changes in temperature in your home since your AC and Heat pumps are overworking which translates to increased energy bills.

Uneven Temperatures

One of the most significant factors that affect the temperature of your house from room to room is poor insulation. Sometimes you may notice that your master bedroom is comfortable while the kitchen is extremely cold in winter and too hot in the summer. This may be a clear indicator that your master bedroom is well insulated while your kitchen is under-insulated.

Frozen Pipes

This is another huge sign of insulation problems in the home. Poorly insulated exterior walls lead to frozen pipes which can eventually burst to cause hundreds of dollars’ worth of damage in the home.

Cold Walls, Floors, and Ceilings

Always conduct the touch test in your home. Typically, the interior walls, ceilings, and floors should feel warm and dry. When the paneling and drywall inside your house feel cold or damp, then there isn’t sufficient insulation.

Ice Dams on the Roof

Ice dams occur when heat that is rising from your poorly-insulated home melts at the lower layer of snow off of your house roof. The resulting water starts trickling down towards the gutters and starts to freeze after coming in contact with the cold air. The ice damming can cause trouble on your house roof and gutter.
